The Rewards of Giving

by J4K Foundation

We are proud to share the below letter from Alison Feigh, Program Manager at the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center (JWRC). Stories like this further validate our mission to provide, protect and prepare Minnesota’s children.  And we are happy to have had a hand in supporting a much-needed resource to local families.

“As you may have heard in the media, there was an abduction of a 7 year old girl in St Paul in early May. The child was recovered alive, but had endured a very horrible ordeal. We were contacted by neighbors of the child that was abducted asking if we could help them try to figure out how to talk to their children about what had happened, provide safety messages to families, and offer a safe place to air out their concerns and worries.

Knowing that this neighborhood was in crisis mode, we put the event together for the parents that Sunday afternoon. A local park let us use their community room and the families spread the word. We had about 20 parents show up for that Sunday event. We intentionally didn’t publicize it outside of their neighborhood as we wanted it to be a safe place for neighbors to process and get information. Many of the parents who did arrive, arrived in tears.

The event was a very positive experiences. Families were so thankful that they were given the tools of how to go home and talk to their children. They had been feeling somewhat paralyzed in knowing that their children needed reassurance, but they didn’t know what to say. Our staff provided them with specific talking points, role playing examples, take home materials and an open ended invitation to call our advocates at any time if they needed more information or wanted a more personalized safety plan.

We were able to put this event together, at no cost to the families impacted, because of donor support. It was such a relief to know that we could offer a weekend workshop very quickly without needing to charge the families anything. The families left very grateful and relieved.

running-home-for-jacobTHANK YOU for funding this opportunity. Your recent gift of $1,000 helped us to do this important work and to respond to the needs of families EVERY DAY. We never charge for victim assistance work and that is due to donor support.

Sending all of my thanks to your wonderful event/fundraising team.”
